What 78th Emmy Costume Credits Show About Nominated Versus Juried Categories
Nominated costume Emmys name designers, supervisors and workroom heads, while juried variety awards go to a panel vote with no nominees.
The Television Academy awards costume design through two kinds of Emmy category. Scripted series compete from a list of nominees. Variety, nonfiction and reality programmes are decided by juried panels, which work without a nominee list.
The Academy’s pages for the 78th Emmy Awards list each winner and nominee with an episode title and its credits. Read alongside its juried winners from earlier years, they show how the awards are structured and who is named on a costume Emmy.
Nominated Categories Cover Scripted Series and Period Shows
For the 78th Emmys, the Television Academy’s nominee pages list two scripted costume categories: Outstanding Contemporary Costumes for a Series and Outstanding Period Costumes. Each entry names an episode and lists its costume credits.
The contemporary series winner was Margo’s Got Money Troubles on Apple TV, for the episode ‘Grudge Match’. Mirren Gordon-Crozier is credited as costume designer, with Brooke Thatawat as costume supervisor and Tara White as head of workroom. Tracy Jarvis is credited as assistant costume designer and Mallory Bradley as key costumer.
The contemporary category page lists five entries, including the winner. The period page lists one winner and four nominees, so the two scripted categories carry different sizes of credit list.
2026 Period Winner
The Television Academy lists Palm Royale as the 2026 Outstanding Period Costumes winner, with Alix Friedberg credited as costume designer.
How a Juried Category Is Decided
A 2015 Television Academy announcement described the juried process. Entries are screened by a panel of peer professionals. An entry may win an Emmy, or none may. Juried categories have no nominees, and the panel discusses each entry and then votes yes or no on whether it deserves an Emmy.
The 2015 announcement also said that only entries with unanimous approval win. That means every juror on the panel has to approve an entry before it can take an Emmy.
A 2024 Television Academy announcement describes the same kind of process as a one-step evaluation and voting procedure. It says entries are screened by professionals in the relevant peer groups, and that any number of entries, including none, may receive an Emmy. Juried costume awards have no nominees, only a panel vote on each entry.
Juried Winners From 2015, 2024 and 2026
In 2015, at the 67th Emmy Awards, the category was titled Outstanding Costumes For A Variety Program Or A Special, and two entries won. Drunk History’s ‘Hollywood’ on Comedy Central credited Christina Mongini as costume designer and Cassandra Conners as costume supervisor. The Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show Starring Katy Perry, on NBC and NFL Network, credited Marina Toybina as costume designer and Courtney Webster as assistant costume designer.
The 2015 juried awards were scheduled to be presented on September 12 at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony. An edited broadcast was scheduled to air on FXX on September 19, and the full stream on September 20.
In 2024 the juried costume award went to Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music on HBO Max. The Academy announced the juried winners on August 14, 2024. The award was scheduled to be presented on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE, a ceremony set to run over two consecutive nights, September 7 and 8. Machine Dazzle is credited as costume designer.
The 2026 variety, nonfiction or reality costume page lists two winning entries. What the Credit Lists Show Across Categories
Every 2026 entry in these categories credits at least one supervisor. For Only Murders in the Building, that credit is listed as wardrobe supervisor. Every scripted nominee names a costume designer, and The Traitors credits a wardrobe designer instead.
The head of workroom is credited on six entries: Palm Royale, The Gilded Age, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Hacks and The Masked Singer. The Traitors does not list one.
The 2015 juried winners list designers, supervisors and assistant designers. The 2026 juried winners add a head of workroom on The Masked Singer and a stylist on The Traitors. Some scripted entries also add associate or assistant designers, as the Bridgerton and Gilded Age entries show.
Across the pages, the credits that recur are the costume designer, the costume supervisor and the assistant costume designer, with a head of workroom on six entries.
