Cable News Goes Wall-To-Wall With Coverage As Ex-FBI Director & Trump Foe James Comey Indicted
As long desired by Donald Trump, James Comey was indicted Thursday by a Virginia grand jury on charges of lying to Congress.
With the fix seeming to be in ever since Trump ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to go after the former FBI director and other perceived enemies days ago, cable news went wall-to-wall with today’s anticipated move.
CNN reporter Katelyn Polantz called it “a monumental moment in the second presidency of Donald Trump” as she revealed the charges Comey is facing on The Lead With Jake Tapper.
On CNN’s Erin Burnett Outfront, a contributor voiced the opinion that the indictment occurred because Trump directed Bondi to indict Comey.
MSNBC’s Ari Melber said the decision followed “unusual and extreme pressure from the President on that department’s office after the acting U.S. attorney for that district departed, and allegedly there is internal memoranda that doubted that this indictment of James Comey should even go forward, citing insufficient evidence.”
Over on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show, the talk was all about rebuffing notions that Comey’s yet unseen indictment is all about Trump punishing his critics. Instead, Ingraham and guests put the spotlight on the “weaponization” of the DOJ under previous administrations against Trump.
Ever since DC whispers of Comey’s indictment again earlier this summer, any case against the former bureau boss has been widely derided as weak at best. Still, Trump persisted.
Comey was fired by Trump during his first over the investigation into Trump’s 2016 campaign and its ties to Russia. He has been consistent and longtime critic of what he called Trump’s efforts to politicize the justice system.
