Rep. Brian Mast: Donald Trump Has Done the Impossible | Opinion
When President Donald Trump delivers his State of the Union address Tuesday evening, the entire world will be watching. What it will see is a president who did what many didn’t think was possible, a president who achieved incredible results because he understands that only through strength can we truly have peace.
Since returning to office, President Trump has taken decisive action to restore America’s standing on the world stage and make it clear that we’re done apologizing for defending our interests. America is back, stronger than ever, and we won’t apologize for it.
Let’s look to the Middle East. Under Joe Biden’s failed presidency, the world’s most volatile region plunged into chaos with the war in Gaza. The Biden-Harris administration’s weakness led to unstable and hostile conditions. But, in less than a year, President Trump did what the so-called “experts” said couldn’t be done. He ended the war by building a ceasefire framework, securing the release of hostages and putting forward a 20-point plan aimed at long-term regional stability and prosperity. No one else could have achieved such a feat.
And when it came to Iran, President Trump didn’t blink. In a clear demonstration of American strength and precision, he made the bold decision to attack Iran’s nuclear weapons capability. No half-measures. No empty warnings. Just action. His administration has kept up the pressure with strong sanctions that are squeezing the regime where it hurts. President Trump also made it crystal clear that radical Islamic terrorists who threaten Americans will face swift consequences. From eliminating a senior ISIS attack planner to targeting those who plot against our citizens, President Trump has proven that if you threaten America, you will pay the price.
Projecting strength abroad doesn’t just mean combating conflicts across the globe; it also means protecting families here at home. That’s why President Trump authorized targeted strikes against narco-terrorist networks in Venezuela and across the Caribbean that have been flooding our streets with drugs. And the flawless law enforcement mission to capture Nicolás Maduro sent a loud, clear message: if you poison our people, we will come after you. No excuses. No safe havens.
At the same time, the Trump administration is cleaning up the machinery of American diplomacy. For too long, our foreign policy establishment chased global approval instead of defending American interests. Under President Trump’s direction, the State Department is getting back to basics—advancing U.S. priorities and putting American citizens first.
In Congress, we’re backing that up with real reform. As chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I’ve led State Department reauthorization efforts that demand accountability, cut waste and refocus our diplomatic corps on key national interests—instead of projects that diminish our soft power abroad. That includes advancing USAID rescissions to claw back taxpayer dollars that were being spent on bloated, ineffective and outright misguided foreign aid programs. If it doesn’t make America safer, stronger or more prosperous, it shouldn’t be funded. It’s that simple.
Our military is also benefitting from a $1 trillion investment, the eradication of woke DEI policies and a total refocus on lethality. This peace-through-strength approach to our armed forces is restoring pride among our men and women in uniform and delivering on President Trump’s commitment to restore safety and security for the American people.
Democrats in Congress have tried to claim that an America-first foreign policy would lead to chaos. The exact opposite has happened. Peace is achieved when our adversaries know we are serious. When they know we will act. When they know we won’t hesitate.
Contrast that with the confusion and weakness we’ve seen from the far Left. Recently, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) incoherently stumbled through basic questions about Taiwan at the Munich Security Conference—one of the most important foreign policy stages in the world. She sounded like a third grader giving a report on a book she never read.
That kind of ignorance isn’t just embarrassing. It’s dangerous. Our enemies are watching. And so are our allies—when they see that kind of confusion on the world stage, the choice becomes simple. They’d rather stand with President Trump’s clear, steady and unapologetically strong leadership than gamble on incoherent talking points.
President Trump offers a stark contrast: clear-eyed leadership in a tough world. He understands that geopolitics isn’t a classroom debate—it’s hardball. And he plays to win for the American people.
As the State of the Union approaches, Americans can take pride in this: we have a president who fights for our security, defends our sovereignty and delivers real results. Under President Trump’s leadership, America is safer, stronger and more prosperous—and we’re just getting started.
