What Renner and Brolin’s A Speck in the Sea Casting Shows About Selling a Film at AFM

Jeremy Renner and Josh Brolin are set to headline A Speck in the Sea, a survival thriller based on a true story, according to a Deadline report that had appeared by Nov. 2, 2026. Orlando von Einsiedel is directing from a screenplay by Jeff Pope.

Legendary’s 193 handles international sales and plans to present the film to buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.

What Was Announced on Nov. 2

Brolin plays Johnny Aldridge, a Montauk lobster fisherman. Renner plays Anthony Sosinski, Aldridge’s best friend and fishing partner. Screen Rant, HeyUGuys and MovieWeb all describe the same two leads and the same premise.

The film is based on an incident in 2013. Aldridge fell off his fishing boat into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean at night while Sosinski slept below deck. When Sosinski woke and found his partner missing, he set off a multi-state rescue effort, while Aldridge worked to stay alive in the water.

Further casting and release details have yet to be announced, according to HeyUGuys.

The Rescue by the Numbers
According to Dan’s Papers, John Aldridge was found about 43 miles south of Montauk roughly 12.5 hours after he fell from the Anna Mary on July 24, 2013, following a nine-hour search over about 660 square miles.

The Filmmakers Behind the Project

Von Einsiedel won an Academy Award for the short documentary The White Helmets and received a Best Documentary Feature nomination for Virunga, according to Screen Rant. A Speck in the Sea is described in the coverage as a survival thriller based on a true story.

Pope, the screenwriter, earned a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination for Philomena.

The producers named are Mark Bauch, of One Day’s Walk, and Jonathan Eirich, of Rideback. Screen Rant and MovieWeb describe Eirich as a two-time Emmy nominee, while HeyUGuys calls him a two-time BAFTA nominee.

Bauch said in the announcement that Brolin and Renner bring the “grit, humanity and humor” the roles demand, as quoted by Screen Rant. Eirich called the real events one of the most remarkable true accounts of survival and perseverance the producers have encountered.

Why 193 and the American Film Market Matter

193 is the company handling international sales. Its chief executive, Patrick Wachsberger, said in the announcement that the film brings together an exceptional cast and creative team to tell “a wild true story,” as quoted by MovieWeb. He added that the company looks forward to making it available at the upcoming AFM.

The American Film Market is held each year in early November, according to its Wikipedia entry. Unlike a film festival, the participants’ main focus is production and distribution deals. Attendees come from more than 70 countries and include acquisition and development executives, agents, distributors, financiers, producers and writers.

The market screens more than 400 films seeking theatrical and television distribution, with about 700 screenings across 29 theater screens. Since 2017 it has also offered AFM Screening on Demand, a video-on-demand platform that lets buyers watch films outside the scheduled screening times.

The Independent Film & Television Alliance, a trade association for independent film and television producers and distributors, now produces the market. The market was founded in 1981 by the American Film Marketing Association, headed by producer Andy Vajna.

At the market, 193 will introduce the film to buyers.

Further casting and release details have yet to be announced.

The 2013 Rescue the Film Draws On

Dan’s Papers, which covered the rescue a week after it happened, reported that Aldridge fell from the Anna Mary sometime around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, after a cooler handle snapped as he moved it. The boat was about 62 miles offshore when Sosinski realized he was missing, according to that account.

Sosinski searched the boat and then called the Coast Guard. The search lasted about nine hours. Two Station Montauk rescue boat crews, two 87-foot rescue patrol boats, aircraft and two rescue helicopters took part, along with good Samaritans and local fishing vessels. Together they covered about 660 square miles.

Aldridge was found about 43 miles south of Montauk, roughly 12.5 hours after he went into the water. He was taken to Falmouth Hospital on Cape Cod and treated for dehydration, exposure and hypothermia. He had used cut lobster buoys and his boots as flotation.

At a press conference, Aldridge said, “Dying wasn’t an option.” The Dan’s Papers account also quotes Sosinski describing the local and federal support during the search as unprecedented.

Where Both Actors Stand Now

Screen Rant notes that this is the fourth film in which the two appear together. They were both in Avengers: Age of Ultron, with Renner as Hawkeye and Brolin as Thanos, who appears only in the post-credits scene. They were both in Avengers: Endgame. They also appeared in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery in 2025, with Brolin as Monsignor Jefferson Wicks and Renner as congregant Nat Sharp.

Brolin’s film Whalefall, based on Daniel Kraus’s novel and co-starring Austin Abrams, was released Oct. 16. Screen Rant lists his upcoming work as returning as Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part Three and as Matt Graver in a third Sicario film.

Renner returned as Mike McLuskey in Mayor of Kingstown last year. Season 5, the final season, premieres Jan. 15, 2027, on Paramount+. His Oscar nominations came for The Hurt Locker and The Town.

Further casting and release details have yet to be announced.
