How Paul Bettany’s It’s Alright Reached Buyers With a Pop-Star Plot and Scheduled Early 2027 Shoot

Paul Bettany has been named as the lead of It’s Alright, a feel-good comedy he co-wrote with the director Scott Stewart. Variety reported the casting and sales launch on 3 November 2026. Film Music Reporter covered the project the same day, and British Comedy Guide followed on 6 November.

The announcement brings together a cast, a sales company and a music team before cameras roll. Filming is scheduled to begin in early 2027, and the film is being offered to international buyers ahead of the American Film Market.

The package pairs an actor-writer with the fast-rising actor and musician Asha Banks, a Universal Music soundtrack release and a sales company that has started selling the project before it has been shot.

What Was Announced on 3 November

According to Variety, Bettany plays Peter Sayer, a fading pop star. Asha Banks plays Georgie, his 19-year-old estranged daughter and an aspiring singer-songwriter. Colin Firth and Gugu Mbatha-Raw also star.

Stewart directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Bettany. The two are reuniting after Legion and Priest.

Variety describes the film as a feel-good comedy with original songs. It is not a musical. The songs are performed by Banks, Bettany and other artists joining the cast.

Variety lists the cast’s earlier credits. Bettany’s include Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and VisionQuest. Firth’s include The King’s Speech and A Single Man. Mbatha-Raw’s include Fuze and Surface. Banks’s screen credits include My Fault: London and Your Fault: London.

Bettany holds three roles on the project. He leads the cast, shares the writing credit with Stewart and is one of the executive producers.

The Story Buyers Are Being Offered

Peter is near financial ruin when a letter prompts him to meet a daughter who does not know he exists. After he watches Georgie perform in her hometown, he panics and poses as a music producer.

He brings her to London with a promise to work on her demo. As they collaborate, Georgie helps revive his comeback.

An industry mogul backing Peter then pressures him to move away from his musical vision. He must choose between commercial success and protecting what he and Georgie have created together.

Film Music Reporter gives a shorter version of the premise. It describes a fading pop star on the edge of financial ruin when a bombshell letter spurs him to meet his 19-year-old daughter, who has no idea he exists.

British Comedy Guide, in an item dated Friday 6 November, gives the same outline. It says filming is due early in 2027.

Production is scheduled to begin in early 2027.

The film is a feel-good comedy with original songs, but it is not a musical.

Who Is Producing and Who Represents the Cast

Variety names Raindog Films and Pacesetter Productions as the production companies. The producers are Trish D Chetty and Ged Doherty of Raindog and Jessica Rhoades of Pacesetter.

Film Music Reporter credits Chetty with Luther: Never Too Much and Kickback, Doherty with Eye in the Sky and Loving, and Rhoades with Station Eleven and Below.

The executive producers named by Variety are Alison Mo Massey, Bettany and Hélène Theodoly, along with the three Protagonist executives.

British Comedy Guide says Colin Firth’s production company is one of the companies making the film. Variety’s list of producing companies does not include a Firth company.

Variety also lists the talent representation behind the cast. Bettany is represented by UTA and Affirmative Entertainment. Firth is with Independent Talent in the U.K. and CAA in the U.S. Mbatha-Raw is with CAA, Curtis Brown and Anonymous Content.

Banks is represented by Sarah Camlett of Independent Talent Group and Will Harper of Sequoia Music Management, with ACE PR also named.

The Music Team and the Soundtrack

Marius de Vries is producing the original soundtrack, which Universal Music will release, according to Variety. The trade describes him as a BAFTA winner whose credits include La La Land, Moulin Rouge! and CODA.

Film Music Reporter, which credits Variety, published an item on 3 November naming de Vries as executive music producer. It also lists his work on Kick-Ass, Strange Magic, Sucker Punch and Navalny.

The same item says de Vries has Queen of the Falls coming, a drama from Rania Attieh and Daniel Garcia starring Pamela Anderson and Guy Pearce. It also says the documentary Pete Townshend: Behind Blue Eyes, from Frank Marshall and Nigel Sinclair, premiered at Telluride this year and awaits a release date.

Banks brings her own music background to the project. Variety says she will also write original songs for the film. British Comedy Guide quotes her saying that writing music for It’s Alright “has been the most fulfilling creative challenge.”

Variety quotes Banks as saying Georgie is unlike any character she has played.

Stewart told Variety that the film is about second chances and the power of music to bring people together. Variety also quotes him as saying he and Bettany set out to tell a story that is funny, moving and full of life.
